Payatas Dumpsite Feeding Outreach

This month April, we LOCA group together with Chummy Chum done the feeding outreach at Red Cross Center, Payatas Dumpsite is also a large rubbish dump in Manila, Philippines similar as Smokey Mountain. Payatas Dumpsite (now officially & benignly re-named "Quezon City Controlled Disposal Facility") came to the attention of the world in July 2000, when, following typhoon-spurred rains, a mountain of garbage collapsed on hundreds of scavenger shanties. In the wake of the accident, 219 bodies were recovered, and no one knows how many more remain entombed in garbage. Most of the victims were children, at home on a day declared a holiday because of the typhoon. 

Payatas mountain covers 22 hectares (54 acres.) . It averages seven stories in height (70 feet doesn't sound very tall.... until you SEE it.)  It is the daily repository for 2,00 tons of Metro Manila's garbage.  3500 families live at the edges of the dumpsite, surviving by scavenging for plastic, cardboard, paper, wood, glass, metal, tires and other items that can be sold to recycling agents. The people living from picking through the rubbish. They are poor but not as Smokey.

This Red Cross Center is educating 100 kids, from age 5 to 10 years old. We had a coaster with around 15 of  volunteers and 130 pieces of slipper, 130 pieces of loot bag, 150 packs of lunch. We are led by 2 clowns as the purposed to cheer the kids. Regardless it was a great day with the kids especially those volunteers have gift/food giving and play the games with the kids.

 

Aside these, it was Miss Dora - LOCA host's birthday~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Miss DORA, she's super cheerful girl and she puts in so much to the kids!!! Great girl! LOCA wish you all the best!!!
